A Masterwork of Baroque Portraiture

This marble portrait bust is a faithful reproduction of one of the supreme achievements of Baroque sculpture — the Bust of Francesco I d'Este, created by the Italian master Gian Lorenzo Bernini and completed in 1652. The original, carved in Carrara marble, resides in the Galleria Estense, Modena, Italy, and is widely regarded as one of the finest portrait busts ever made.

The Subject

The work depicts Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena — a powerful Italian nobleman and celebrated patron of the arts. Bernini never met his subject in person; instead, he worked from painted portraits, yet produced a likeness of extraordinary psychological depth and physical presence.

Bernini's Genius in Stone

The noble yet detached expression of the face, the sweeping drapery, and the lavish, wind-caught locks of hair are emblematic of Bernini's singular ability to represent absolute authority — monarchs and rulers seemingly lost in thought, elevated above the world around them. This bust is considered a defining example of how Bernini immortalised power in marble.

Such was the cultural resonance of the work that the artist Francesco Stringa painted the bust in the late 1660s, surrounded by symbolic objects — a painting now held in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Bring Baroque Grandeur to Your Interior

Made in dry cast Carrara marble and finished to museum quality, this reproduction captures every nuance of Bernini's original — the tension in the drapery, the commanding gaze, the extraordinary surface detail of the hair. It is a statement piece for collectors, interior designers, and those who appreciate the enduring power of classical sculpture.
