THE VEILED LADY, a marble bust, after the antique sculpture by Monti, 1875.
Finely finished in polished Carrara marble and set upon a white and black veined polished socle.
Also known as the bride, the sculpture statue was created by the Italian sculptor Raphaelle Monti, who came to England to live and work in 1850.
The original marble sculpture was such a hit with the nobility and general public alike, that victorian reproduction companies of the time wanted to release their own version, so that such a pleasing eye catching sculpture could be owned by anybody.
It was altered from the original so it could be more easily recast in the porcelain of the day.
He established his name with the Veiled Lady statue, which was purchased by the Duke of Chatsworth house.
