Giovanni Battista Piranesi: Visionary of Antiquity

Born in 1720 in the Republic of Venice, Piranesi was introduced to the ancient Roman civilisation by his brother and from 1740 studied in Rome under Giuseppe Vasi, who taught him the art of etching and engraving. Between 1748 and 1774 he created his celebrated long series of views (Vedute) of Rome, which established his international fame and for which he continued to produce plates until the year of his death in 1778. His extraordinary vision of classical antiquity—its grandeur, drama, and timeless beauty—has inspired artists, architects, and collectors ever since.
