The smooth marble shaft rises with classical authority from a richly detailed base, its clean lines and smooth surface a deliberate counterpoint to the intricate detail. Decorative iron gates to all four sides open the base to the eye, while arched windows above — bring the vocabulary of European civic architecture into miniature.
