Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish-Icelandic sculptor and medalist of international fame who spent most of his life in Italy. Born in Copenhagen into a working-class Danish/Icelandic family, he was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art at the remarkable age of eleven—a testament to his extraordinary natural talent. He went on to become one of the greatest neoclassical sculptors of his era, rivalling even Canova in fame and influence, and his grand marble vases are among the most celebrated decorative works of the period.
